The first fleet of Healthy
Maine Street free bikes will
roll onto the streets of Machias
this summer. Bikeshare,
a free bike sharing program
unique to Washington County,
is one of several initiatives
being undertaken by the Town
of Machias Revitalization
Committee, Healthy Acadia and
community partners in an effort
to achieve a healthier, cleaner
and greener community.
The Bikeshare, Bike program
relies on donations of gently used
bicycles, which are maintained
and repaired by a network of
local volunteers. Thanks to
the generosity and support
of community members, the
Bikeshare Bike fleet now has
bikes available in a variety of
sizes, creating a town-wide bikesharing
network. Healthy Maine
Machias Bike lending program offers a free ride around town
Street Bikeshare Bikes will
be available to borrow for use
throughout greater downtown
Machias.

Although those 18 years of
age and older are not currently
required by Maine law to ride
with a helmet, Healthy Maine
Street requires all users to
wear bicycle safety helmets,
regardless of age. Lending
stations will issue each rider
an appropriately sized safety
helmet, as well as a bike lock,
upon bicycle pickup. Bikeshare
Bike users can shop, sightsee,
or stop for lunch, confident that
their loaner bike will be where
they left it when they return.
