A visit to way Down East Maine gives you the opportunity to also visit Canada.  Immerse yourself in local culture in both the fishing villages of Maine but also the culture of maritime Canada.

Step over the border into the Canadian maritimes and instantly you have the feel and flavor of another culture.  New Brunswick is one of Canada’s multi-lingual provinces, so you’ll hear French as often as English during your travels here.  True to form, most Canadians are friendly and welcome visitors.

Campobello Island is a Canadian island and home to Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt’s summer home.  Free admission and tours.  The island itself is charming and full of nooks and crannies to visit and explore – check out the short video below.

Head along the coast on Route 1 (maybe stop in Eastport along the way) through Calais, Maine into New Brunswick, Canada to visit the small villages along the coast.  St. Stephen, New Brunswick is know as Canada’s chocolate town – be sure to tour the chocolate museum .  St. Andrews is a beautiful resort village on the Bay of Fundy.  Head about an hour further to the cosmopolitan city of St. John with it’s market, historical district and ferry to Digby, Nova Scotia. Stop for lunch – perhaps poutine?

Just remember that traveling to Canada now requires either a passport or a passport card.  Even the little bridge from Lubec to Campobello Island requires a stop at the customs booth and a passport check.  Be prepared so you won’t be disappointed.
